The Facts On Diabetes
Diabetic retinopathy is estimated to be the most frequent cause of new cases of blindness among adults aged 20-74 years.  According to the American Diabetes Association, persons with diabetes should have a comprehensive dilated retinal exam annually.  Examinations should be more frequent if retinopathy is progressing.  Women with diabetes should receive a comprehensive eye examination in the first trimester, since pregnancy increases the risk for diabetic retinopathy.  Many insurance plans do not require a primary care referral for diabetics to have these exams by an optometrist.  Optometrists are qualified to perform these exams.
